How to Be an Early Riser: 4 tips to help you get out of bed

We’ve all heard that successful people wake up early, and begin their mornings energized and ready for anything the office brings them….but how? How do they break the cycle of staying up late, waking up exhausted in the morning, and starting the day on the wrong foot? There are many tricks, and we’ve found a few that we think might help you become a successful early riser!

1. Go to Bed Earlier

This seems like a given, but it’s something that many people struggle to do. Our days are filled with work, kids, pets and a plethora of other chores and tasks. It’s very difficult to tend to all of our responsibilities on an empty tank. The Center for Disease Control recommends adults age 18-60 get 7+ hours of sleep each night.

2. Unplug at Night

Most of us are addicted to our phones, laptops, and tablets. It seems like a harmless addiction in terms of our sleeping patters, but the blue light from our devices actually inhibits melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone that controls our sleep/wake cycle. Without it, our minds stay busy, and our bodies don’t know that it’s time for bed. Putting down electronic devices 30 minutes to an hour before it’s time for bed allows the production of melatonin, and helps us get to sleep on time. Try reading, folding laundry, or taking a warm bath to help wind down.

3. Move Your Alarm

The old “put your alarm clock across the room” trick is still relevant. It’s easy to hit snooze when the button is twelve inches away, but when it’s across the room we’re forced to stand up to quiet the (obnoxious) wake up call. By then, we’re already on our feet, and we just have to stay that way!

4. Get AWAY From Your Bed Quickly!

Even when we do move our alarm clocks to the other side of the room, what’s stopping us from walking right back to our beds and drifting off to dreamland? The trick here is to get away from our beds immediately! Walk into your living room (don’t sit down), to the kitchen, outside to the porch, anywhere except close to your bed. Give yourself a minute or two to get the thought of going back to sleep out of your head.

Getting up early isn’t impossible. It’s just a matter of starting, and then continuing until it becomes a habit. We hope these tips will help you stick to it!
